A few people out there may be wondering why I’m creating a whole new user guide for WordPress when there’s already a very extensive one available on the WordPress.org website.
Why bother?
WordPress is massive. The more people it attracts, the bigger and better it will get. So my aim is to help new WordPress users master the basics of managing a self-hosted WordPress installation and be able to get quick answers to questions or problems. In my opinion, the WordPress.org website is often too big to achieve this.
This is not a guide for developers. There are countless developer tutorials and walkthroughs online and they are beyond the scope of this guide. If you’re the person responsible for using WordPress to manage your blog/website content, this guide is for you.
The guide will be written as I would usually tutor a new user on a one-to-one basis and will move from the first time you login to the most advanced content management solutions you’ll ever need.
Exclusions
There are a few topics not covered:
- WordPress installation
- WordPress theme customization
- WordPress search marketing
Please note: this guide is written for WordPress 2.7. Hopefully the WordPress development team won’t release WP2.8 before I get finished.
So what is included?
There are a lot of topics to cover, and I haven’t finished all the posts yet, so I’m not 100% sure of the exact posts that will crop up. That said, you can expect to find guides on:
- WordPress Pro’s and Con’s
- Logging in to WordPress
- Modifying your user settings
- Spam protection
- Permalinks
- Backing up your WordPress database
- Backing up your WordPress files
- Pages, Posts, Categories and Tags
- Creating Categories
- Creating Pages & Posts
- Adding & formatting content
- Adding images and media to your site
- Links
- Widgets and theme options
- Plugins
- User management
- RSS feeds
- Importing & exporting data
- Upgrading WordPress
- Writing settings
- Reading settings
- Comments
- And a bunch of other stuff…
I’ll be posting new content as often as I can which is probably about twice a week barring any catastrophes. I encourage you to email me with questions or comments, or add to the articles in the comments sections.
