One of the oldest and simplest ways of building backlinks to your website is to add listings to online directories. Directory submissions are boring and tedious (hence the reason I charge £135 for 500 manual submissions) but they do work.

If you can find 20 minutes every Friday to add your website to 10 directories, you should start to see an increase in website traffic and search engine rankings within a few months.

Where to find online directories

I’ve made finding suitable online directories easy by listing 10 of them below. Simply click on the links and add your details to each directory. If you’re looking for more, you can search Google for free directory submissions. Or simply wait until next Friday when I’ll have another 10 submission links ready for you.

Important information

You need to supply a directory with information about your website so that it can enter the listing. You can save time by preparing the following information in advance:

• Your site title.
• A description of your site.
• A few descriptive keywords.
• Your name.
• Your email address.

On most directories you’ll be asked to select a category to be listed in. Take the time to choose carefully. It helps.

Free submissions only

Seen as you’re on a micro business budget, make sure you only choose the free submission options with each directory. It takes a bit longer to get listed, but the savings are huge.

Some directories may also ask for a reciprocal link back to the directory. If you have a links page on your website and you can provide a reciprocal link, do so. Personally I don’t like the idea of reciprocal linking so I generally skip any submission requiring it.

A warning

I can’t gaurantee that these directories will still be in business when you try to submit. You may also get some annoying pop-up adverts on some of the sites. Unfortunately that’s life in the directory submission business.

It shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes to complete this list so get to it! Then take the rest of the week off.
